Hosting a karaoke night in Mully's Bar basement
A step-by-step guide for hosting society karaoke nights — Taylor Swift Soc, Bulgarian Soc, Rock Soc and the rest. Run the setup at home, preload the songs you want, then plug into the bar's system. The night is run from the host laptop: one person takes requests from the room and queues them, and the laptop plays them on the projector.
Pre-prep at home (do once before the event)
The setup script installs everything (Node.js, Karaoke Eternal, Open Video Downloader, yt-dlp and ffmpeg), creates an empty KaraokeSongs folder on your Desktop, and puts three shortcuts next to it. It's safe to run again, and replaces the shortcuts an older version of the script made.
On a Mac: open Terminal (Cmd + Space, type Terminal), paste this and press Enter. If Homebrew isn't installed yet it will ask for your Mac password.
curl -fsSL https://www.adamscampustoolbox.org.uk/guides/mullys-karaoke/setup-mac.sh | bashOn Windows: open PowerShell (Win + X, then Terminal or PowerShell), paste this and press Enter. Accept any install prompts that appear.
irm https://www.adamscampustoolbox.org.uk/guides/mullys-karaoke/setup-win.ps1 | iexOnce it finishes, your Desktop has:
- Mully's Karaoke (the microphone) starts karaoke.
- Open Video Downloader downloads a YouTube link you paste in, with a preview and a progress bar.
- Song Search (the music note) downloads the top YouTube result for a song name.
Want to see what you're running first? Read the Mac script or the Windows script.
Create the admin account and add your songs folder
Do this once at home, straight after setup:
- Double-click “Mully's Karaoke”. A window opens (leave it open), and your browser opens Karaoke Eternal's Welcome screen.
- Create your admin account. Pick a username and password you'll remember on the night — you'll sign in with them at the bar. This also creates the default room, Room 1.
- The library says Library Empty. Click Add media folders (or go to the Account tab, Preferences, Media Folders), click Add Folder, browse to
KaraokeSongson your Desktop and click Add Folder. Karaoke Eternal scans it straight away. - Open that folder's settings in Media Folders and tick Watch folder, so songs downloaded during the night show up without a restart.
Getting your songs (at home or during the party)
You don't need thousands of random tracks. Societies can prep their own tracklist in advance, or grab songs on request during the night. Both downloaders save straight into KaraokeSongs, so with Watch folder ticked a new song appears in the Library on its own.
Got a link? Use “Open Video Downloader”:
- Find the song on YouTube (search the song name plus karaoke) and copy the link from the browser's address bar.
- Double-click “Open Video Downloader” on your Desktop. The very first time, it spends a minute fetching its own download tools before showing Your queue is empty.
- Paste the link into the box at the top (Enter a video/playlist link to add to the queue) and click Add. The video joins the queue with its thumbnail and title.
- Click Download at the bottom. When the card reads Download complete, the MP4 is in
KaraokeSongs. On a Mac, if it asks to access your Desktop folder, click Allow.
Only know the song name? Use “Song Search”:
- Double-click “Song Search” on your Desktop. A prompt box appears.
- Type what you're after (e.g. Taylor Swift Cruel Summer karaoke, or Azis Sen Trope karaoke) and click OK. The top YouTube result is downloaded, so add karaoke to the search. You can paste a link here too.
- It strips clutter like (Karaoke Version) or [Official Video] and saves the video into
KaraokeSongsasArtist - Title.mp4.
Keep downloads for your society's private event, and respect copyright and YouTube's terms.
Stage setup (laptop on stage)
- Turn on the projector with the green remote button, or the POWER ON button on the projector itself.
- Plug the hanging HDMI cable into your laptop.
- Windows: press Win + P and select Extend.
- Mac: connect with an HDMI/USB-C adapter and set Displays to Extend (not Mirror).
- Plug the stage 3.5mm audio jack into your laptop's headphone socket.
- Crucial laptop sound check: set the laptop's sound output to Headphones / Realtek — not Epson, Projector or HDMI. Set system volume to roughly 60–70%.
DJ booth routing
- Video switcher rack: press the ALL button on the far left, then press button 1 on the bottom row (routes stage PC1 to the projector & TVs).
- Mixer desk (channels 11 & 12): make sure PFL is pressed in and MUTE is depressed (NOT LIT).
- Set the bottom red Pan knobs to L (11) and R (12).
- Set the EQ knobs to 12 o'clock, straight up.
- Set the top gain knob to 9 o'clock.
- Raise white faders 11 & 12 to ¼ height.
- Ensure the master yellow & black faders on the far right are at 0.
- Stage microphones: plug the wireless mic base into an open stage channel (e.g. channel 9). On channel 9, set the top gain to 12 o'clock and unmute.
- Bar storeroom: set the wall source dial to DJ and tap the volume up to room level.
Running the party from the laptop
Everything happens on the host laptop. Pick one committee member as the KJ (karaoke jockey) to sit at it all night: they take requests from the room and queue every song themselves. Nobody else needs a phone or an account.
- Double-click “Mully's Karaoke” on your Desktop. Leave the window that opens running all night — closing it stops karaoke.
- Your browser opens Karaoke Eternal automatically. Sign in with your admin account if asked.
- Click Launch Player in the bar at the top (it reads No player in room until you do). The Player opens in a new browser tab.
- Drag that tab out into its own window, move it onto the projector display (the extended screen from stage setup) and make it full screen (F11 on Windows; Ctrl + Cmd + F on a Mac).
- Keep the original window on the laptop screen. This is the KJ's control window: switch between the Library and the Queue with the tabs in its navigation bar.
- To queue a request, open the Library, type the artist or title in the search box at the top, and tap the song. It joins the end of the Queue.
- Start the first song with the play control in the Player window itself — browsers block video from starting on its own. After that the Queue plays through by itself.
The Queue shows what's playing and what's next; use it to reorder or remove upcoming songs. The bar at the top of the control window has Play/Pause and Play Next, so the KJ can pause or skip without touching the projector. Call the next singer up while the current song finishes so the mic is never idle.
End of night reset
- Close the “Mully's Karaoke” window to stop the server.
- Unplug the 3.5mm jack and HDMI from the stage laptop.
- In the DJ booth video switcher, press ALL, then press 3 on the bottom row to return the displays to the venue adverts.
- Pull mixer faders 11 & 12 back to the bottom.
The setup scripts
Both scripts are served from this site: the Mac script uses Homebrew and npm; the Windows script uses winget and npm. Neither touches anything outside the tools it installs, your Desktop shortcuts, a small settings folder and Open Video Downloader's own settings (download folder, MP4 and file names).
If Open Video Downloader saves somewhere else, click Locations at the bottom of its window and set Download location to KaraokeSongs on your Desktop. It keeps its own download tools up to date. Song Search uses the yt-dlp the script installed, and YouTube changes often enough that old copies stop working. If Song Search fails, update it:
brew upgrade yt-dlpwinget upgrade yt-dlp.yt-dlpKaraoke Eternal's own documentation is at karaoke-eternal.com.
