HIV affects more than just the immune system
and the bacteria living in our gut might influence our ability to fight infections!
Come to our
Journal Club
, where we’ll discuss a paper about the relationship between
HIV, the gut microbiome, and immune dysfunction!
🧬 In this session, we'll look at how HIV-associated changes in the gut microbiome may contribute to systemic immunodeficiency and increase susceptibility to opportunistic gut infections.
During the session, we’ll break the paper down together! One of our members will lead with a summary of the article, then we’ll discuss the experiments and findings, and explore some bigger questions 💭 — For example:
How does HIV alter the gut microbiome, and why does this matter for our immune system?
Can changes in gut bacteria contribute to immune dysfunction beyond the gut?
Could targeting the gut microbiome help reduce susceptibility to opportunistic infections in people living with HIV?
📄 The research paper will be sent out
3
days before the session
, giving you time to have a read (and don’t worry if you don’t understand all of it!).
There is
no expertise needed and no pressure to know everything!
Everyone is welcome — whether you already know a bit about HIV and the microbiome or are
completely new to the topic!
