About this Event

UCL Genetics Society is excited to welcome you to our second academic talk of the year ! 🎉 Gene therapies are opening up exciting new possibilities for treating genetic disorders. But what if, instead of permanently altering DNA, we could correct the genetic instructions carried by RNA to treat disease ? For this event, we are delighted to welcome Dr Ellie Chilcott, Senior Research Fellow at the EGA Institute for Women’s Health, University College London , who will introduce her research on developing RNA editing therapies for Dravet syndrome , a rare and severe form of childhood epilepsy often caused by mutations in the SCN1A gene 🧠. She will explore how RNA editing could offer a new approach to treating genetic epilepsies , the challenges involved in developing these therapies, and how advances in gene therapy and RNA-based technologies are creating new possibilities for treating inherited neurological disorders . The event will involve a talk on the research , followed by a Q&A session , giving you the opportunity to ask questions about RNA editing, gene therapy, genetic disorders, and life in academic research! There will also be an opportunity to meet other students interested in genetics and connect with the Genetics Society! 🧬✨ What you can get from the event: 🧬 An introduction to RNA editing and its potential therapeutic applications 🧠 Insights into the genetic basis of Dravet syndrome and emerging approaches to treating childhood epilepsies 🔬 A glimpse into the development of pre-clinical genetic therapies , from laboratory research towards potential clinical applications 💬 The opportunity to ask questions directly to a researcher working at the forefront of RNA-based therapies 👋 A chance to meet other students interested in genetics, neuroscience, and biomedical research This event is designed to be beginner-friendly and accessible , so no prior knowledge of RNA editing or genetic epilepsy is required. Whether you study genetics, neuroscience, biom…
